As we prepare for Minnesota United’s first-ever home playoff game on Sunday, October 20 against the LA Galaxy, we’re taking an opportunity to look back at 10 of our favorite moments from what was a historic, dramatic and action-packed 2019 regular season.
Over the past eight years — stretching well back into the past before Minnesota United was even called Minnesota United — the tradition of fans singing Oasis’ “Wonderwall” after wins has become one of the team’s most enduring and powerful traditions. With the opening of Allianz Field for the 2019 season, it was a question of when, not if, the crowd was going to get to belt the song in the team’s new home.
As it turned out, they had to wait a bit. After starting the season with a five-game road trip, the Loons worked out their opening day jitters with a wild 3-3 draw with NYCFC and then fought the visiting LA Galaxy to a 0-0 standstill. But at the end of a rugged 1-0 win over Wayne Rooney and D.C. United, the moment finally came.
The beauty of a true ritual is that through its constancy, it can reflect many things. Its very unchangingness can make it a mirror for a moment. After any given win, “Wonderwall” could be exultant or fierce or a relief. That first one felt unmistakably like a homecoming, providing a palpable sense of togetherness and a belonging to something greater that only grew stronger over the course of the season on the team’s march towards the playoffs.
