The 2018 Supporters’ Shield winner Red Bulls had a tough start to 2019 with CONCACAF Champions League fixtures congesting the early weeks. Both the Loons and Red Bulls lost their two games heading into the matchup and were left sitting on either side of the playoff line in their respective conferences. For Minnesota, building momentum heading into its home opener at Allianz Field was key. In front of them were the Red Bulls, perennial contenders in the league and historically dominant.
