Minnesota United, Saint Paul Public Schools and the City of Saint Paul will host the sixth annual 2021 Mayor’s Cup, presented by Bell Bank, at Allianz Field on Friday, October 8, 2021.
The Mayor’s Cup is a doubleheader where the boys and girls varsity soccer teams of Como Park High School and Humboldt High School compete in back-to-back games. The girls match will kick off at 5:30 p.m. CT and the boys will play at 7:30 p.m. The Cup first began in 2016 at Como Park High School with Como Park the victors in both matches. The 2021 game will be the first time the Cup is played away from the school fields.
“One of our aspirational goals when we opened Allianz Field in 2019 was for our stadium to be a home not only to Minnesota United, but soccer players at all levels in Minnesota,” said MNUFC CEO Chris Wright. “This is one of our first opportunities to have youth soccer players compete at Allianz Field and we’re very excited to host this year’s Mayor’s Cup and share our stadiums experience with these young athletes. We look forward to being able to bring this opportunity to even more athletes in the years to come.”
Allianz Field and Bell Bank will welcome students, family and all fans from Como Park and Humboldt High Schools for free to support their teams, as well as Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar.
“We’re thrilled to host the sixth annual Mayor’s Cup at Allianz Field in Saint Paul,” said Mayor Melvin Carter. “I look forward to joining members of our community at the game to cheer on our student athletes for this incredible match.”
As a presenting partner, Bell Bank is covering the expenses on behalf of Saint Paul Public Schools for the teams to play this match at Allianz Field.
“We are sincerely grateful to Bell Bank, Minnesota United and the City of Saint Paul for this incredible opportunity for our student athletes,” says Saint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard. “Giving these young people the chance to play on such a grand stage can serve to inspire them to continue to pursue their dreams, both on and off the pitch.”
“Bell Bank is involved in some great community partnerships, and we became excited about the opportunity to help host the Mayor’s Cup in Saint Paul,” said Todd Lee, Bell’s executive vice president for banking and lending administration and regional market leader. “We hope people in the community will enjoy coming together to support their teams and have fun, and we’re proud to help make it happen.”
Each team has played five matches, with the Como Park Girls Soccer Team heading into this year’s match undefeated in the Mayor’s Cup and leading in goals scored with 34. Humboldt Boys and Como Park Boys soccer teams have split the previous meetings, with Humboldt leading with three victories over Como Park’s two.
