Three Minnesotans are on the ballot for the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2017. Tony Sanneh, Taylor Twellman and Briana Scurry are among the 33 names to be nominated for this lifetime career honor. Scurry is one of seven women on the ballot.
Tony Sanneh started his career with D.C. United in May 1996, tallying four goals and eight assists in 25 games to finish fourth on the team in scoring. He moved to Germany following the 1998 MLS season and helped Hertha Berlin qualify for the Champions League. Sanneh returned to MLS in August 2004 with the Columbus Crew. He later went on to sign with LA Galaxy in February 2009, after time with both the Chicago Fire and the Colorado Rapids.
Taylor Twellman scored 101 goals in this eight-year career, ranking fifth in MLS record books. He began his career in Munich, Germany, playing two seasons with TSV. The New England Revolution picked him up in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft. He helped lead New England to their first-ever MLS Cup appearance in his debut season. Twellman ranks fourth in career game-winning goals with 28.
Briana Scurry had her first appearance on the United States Women’s National Soccer team in 1994 against Portugal, and recorded her first shutout. She won Best Goalkeeper Award in the 1999 World Cup, and won an Olympic gold medal in the 2004 games. Scurry was the starting keeper for four World Cups and two Olympic games while on the USWNT.
