A lot goes down on the pitch in any given match. For In the Moment, we talk to a player about a specific play from last week’s match and letting them give an inside view of the play as it developed.
This week, we talked to captain and defender Francisco Calvo, who has notched three assists in three games since his return from the World Cup, about his second assist against Real Salt Lake. The takeaway and pass to Darwin Quintero helped seal the 3-2 win.
Francisco Calvo: You play a little bit more wide when you play with three in the back. You don’t play so much in the middle. On this play, Brent is there in the middle. I can do the same thing with four in the back it just depends on the movement of my strikers and my midfielders and what they do.
I am really used to that formation with the Costa Rica national team and some teams I have played with with three in the back. I like it. It is up to [Head Coach Adrian Heath]. If he decides to play four and he picks me to play, I am going to play four. If he [goes with] three, I am going to play three. It is what is better for the team.
I need to get past [Sunday Stephen] with confidence, because if I don’t believe that I’m going to pass him I can’t do that move that I did. Then he grabbed me. I think I did a really good step against Savarino, then the guy grabbed me. [laughs] But you don’t have to fall.
I saw Christian and then I saw Darwin. Because I am left-footed I thought Darwin was the best option. If I play Christian maybe I miss the pass. [Quintero’s ability to cross] is why I continued my run, because if he decided to give it back to me or give it to Christian and then give it to me. You can see I finish in the middle of the goal. If he passed the ball to me, I would try to score.
