MNUFC2 Signs Speel To MLS NEXT PRO Contract

Welcome Wessel Speel

MNUFC2 announced today that the club has signed goalkeeper Wessel Speel to a one-year MLS NEXT Pro contract, with a club option for 2026.

“Wessel is a goalkeeper we identified coming through the college system with great potential,” said goalkeeper coach Cristiano Costa. “There are some key elements in his game we don’t see around anymore. More importantly, there is also room for development, and that is what we will focus on. We’ll continue to help Wessel grow in his skills so that he will be ready to contribute and make an impact for the club whenever he’s called upon.”

“I am very excited for this big opportunity and want to send a special thanks to Minnesota United for trusting me,” said goalkeeper Wessel Speel.

Wessel Speel joins MNUFC2 on an MLS NEXT Pro contract after spending the 2024 season with Duke University’s men’s soccer team as a graduate student. With the Blue Devils, Speel played and started in 19 matches, recorded seven shutouts and concluded the season with 11-4-4 (W-L-D) record.

The native of Utrecht, Netherlands, Speel also played at the collegiate level with Hofstra University from 2020-2023. During his time with the Pride, Speel appeared in 75 games (all starts), recorded 25 career shutouts, and notably was named the 2022 Third-Team All-Colonial Athletic Association, 2021 First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection and 2021 First Team All-Atlantic Region Pick throughout his four seasons with Hofstra.
