MNUFC2 announced today that the club has signed goalkeeper Alec Smir to a new, one-year MLS NEXT Pro contract.
Ahead of last year’s 2023 campaign, Smir was sent out on loan to USL Championship side Colorado Springs Switchbacks before he was recalled from that loan in May. The keeper then made four game appearances in net (all starts) in 2023, where he recorded 16 saves and notably earned three-straight clean sheets from June 18 through July 2.
Smir made eight game appearances (all starts) for the Twos in their inaugural season in 2022 while earning three wins and one shutout. The North Carolina native notably was selected to participate in the 2022 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge in the return of “Goalie Wars”, defeating three other MLS NEXT Pro goalkeepers to win the surprise event at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
