Minnesota United announced today the club has signed defender Oniel Fisher to a one year contract, plus a club option.
“We’re pleased to bring [Oniel] Fisher into the fold,” said MNUFC Head Coach Adrian Heath. “He’s got plenty of MLS experience and the fact that he can play both leftback and rightback will be huge for us during the year, especially on the left side where we’re missing some depth. If we want to be successful and have the season we want, we’re going to need all of our players and I think he’s a good pick up for us. He’s athletic, a good guy. As an MLS veteran, he knows what’s coming, knows the competition of the league, the travel and how hot it’s going to be in Houston in the middle of May. We’re pleased we’ve got him and we think he’s going to contribute.”
Fisher joins Minnesota after one season with the LA Galaxy. The veteran defender has seven years of MLS experience, playing with D.C. United and the Seattle Sounders, totaling 78 game appearances. He was selected 40th in the second round of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft by the Sounders and split his time between the first and second team in his three seasons in Seattle. He was traded to D.C. ahead of the 2018 season and score his first professional goal in a 4-1 victory over Portland Timbers that season. Internationally, Fisher has 20 caps with the Jamaica National Team, including appearances in the 2020 FIFA World Cup Qualifications. He scores his first international goal in October of 2021 in a 2-0 win over Honduras.
