Following the team’s 2-1 victory over Portland Timbers FC in the Semifinals of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Minnesota United will travel to Georgia to face Atlanta United in the Open Cup Final on Tuesday, August 27. Atlanta defeated Orlando City 2-0 in its Semifinal game on Tuesday, August 6 at 7 p.m. CT. The Final will be streamed on ESPN+.
The road to the Cup Final for MNUFC began with a 4-1 win over visiting Sporting Kansas City at Allianz Field on Wednesday, June 12. Six days later, the Loons followed up that home win with a road win over reigning champs Houston Dynamo 3-2. In the Quarterfinals, MNUFC faced upstart USL Championship side New Mexico United at Allianz Field and, despite allowing the first goal of the game, came back to win 6-1 to advance to the Semifinals against Portland.
With Wednesday’s win, the team has now advanced further than any other Minnesota team in the tournament’s history, bettering the 2005 Minnesota Thunder’s trip to the Semifinals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy.
