Minnesota United today selected defender Tyrone Mears with the fourth pick of Stage 1 of the 2017 MLS Re-Entry Draft. In three years in Major League Soccer, Mears has proven to be a stalwart one-on-one defender who is also savvy with his contributions on the offensive end.
“Tyrone is a very experienced player who has featured in the Premier League and won an MLS Cup,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “He’s an exceptional athlete, so his age doesn’t worry me. Most importantly, he gives us great depth in both fullback positions. Having spoken to the people at Atlanta, we know we’re getting a great professional.”
Mears, 34, arrives in Minnesota following a successful season with Atlanta United, where he made 20 appearances –– including 16 starts –– contributing a goal and an assist in 1498 minutes played. He was a mainstay with Seattle Sounders FC on its road to the 2016 MLS Cup championship, starting 32 of 32 matches, and was equally influential in his debut year in MLS in 2015, leading Sounders FC in minutes and starting all three of the team’s playoff games.
Prior to joining MLS in 2015, the veteran fullback featured in more than 200 matches in the Premier League and Championship of his native England. Mears began his career in the Manchester City youth system before stints with Preston North End (2002–06), West Ham (2006–07), Derby County (2007–09), Burnley (2009–11) and Bolton Wanderers (2011–14).
