Minnesota United today announced the club will travel to face fellow MLS Western Conference club, the Houston Dynamo, in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday, May 23 at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas. Kick is set for 7:30 p.m. CT and the fixture is set to be streamed, with broadcast details to come at a later date.
The match against the Dynamo is now the second scheduled game between the two Western Conference squads in a matter of two weeks: Houston comes to Saint Paul on Wednesday, May 17 in regular-season action before the Loons fly south just a week later for the Open Cup fixture. Minnesota will then travel back to Texas on July 12 for its second regular-season contest of the series. All-time against Houston, Minnesota holds a 7-4-4 (W-L-D) record, with both teams having scored 20 goals apiece. The Loons, however, look to gain a win on the road to bolster its away 2-4-2 record in southern Texas.
MNUFC first defeated Detroit City FC of the USL Championship 3-1 in the Third Round of the tournament, behind goals from Franco Fragapane, Luis Amarilla and MNUFC2’s Emmanuel Iwe.  Then, this last Tuesday, Minnesota advanced past the Philadelphia Union after a 3-3 draw in regulation and extra time that forced a penalty-kick shootout. The Loons prevailed 7-6 on penalties. Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored twice and Joseph Rosales once during regulation and extra time, while Clint Irwin made a penalty-kick winning save against Kai Wagner in the eighth round of kicks to help Minnesota advance.
