MNUFC2 played to a 1-1 regulation draw against the Houston Dynamo 2 on Sunday evening, coming out of the match with the extra point after Twos’ goalkeeper Fred Emmings made a save in the final round of the shootout from the mark.
The Twos got on the board first as forward Kameron Lacey drew a foul in the Dynamo 2 box, earning a penalty kick in the 21st minute. Lacey converted the penalty-kick attempt in the 22nd minute, netting his seventh goal of the season and giving MNUFC2 the 1-0 lead.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Houston side would equalize the match after Papa Ndoye made a run to the MNUFC2 goal, slipping past the back line, where his shot went across the line towards the far post.
In the 78th minute, Twos defender Juan Mosquera was shown his second caution of the game and therefore ejected for the remainder of the match. But, MNUFC2 persisted and earned the draw in regulation, forcing a shootout from the mark to determine which side came away with the extra point.
MNUFC2 made each of its five penalty kick shots and goalkeeper Fred Emmings stopped Dynamo 2’s final attempt to give the Twos the shootout win and the extra point.
With the result, MNUFC2 remain in sixth place in MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference regular-season action with a 7-6-5 record (W-L-D) and 28 points.
MNUFC2 next hosts Earthquakes II at the National Sports Center Stadium in Blaine, Minnesota on Saturday, July 29. Kick for the match is set for 7:00 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
