It’s tough to fly in the Windy City, but Minnesota United’s Academy teams did just that this weekend, as all three squads took on the Chicago Fire for the second time this year. The U15s added a bonus match against Chicago FC United as well, rounding out what was an overall positive weekend in Illinois’ most notable city.
U18
Chicago Fire 2 - 2 MNUFC
A strong start to the match saw the U18s convert a set-piece opportunity for an early lead. A choppy first half led to an equalizer shortly after, as the Loons struggled in possession and ultimately gave the ball up far too easily. Tactical shifts at halftime sorted out the backline, allowing them to deal with overloads across the field. A giveaway at the top of the box allowed the hosts to grab the advantage, but another successful set-piece goal late in the game ultimately split the points.
Goals from Mo Bojang and Emin Lilic powered the Loons to the draw, while standout performers Bryan Espadero, Willy Schmidt, and Gavin Stevenson all demonstrated the kind of work ethic that their coach has helped them develop this season. Espadero and Schmidt were attacking threats throughout the match, staying involved and finding dangerous areas. Stevenson was immense while defending, pressing well and making life difficult for the Fire.
U16
Chicago Fire 2 - 0 MNUFC
Despite losing their match 2-0, Head Coach Jamie Carrol-Rolfe was pleased with his team’s performance. After creating plenty of chances throughout the match, the U16s were unlucky to be held scoreless, especially given the fact that they were playing on the front foot for large portions of the game. Ultimately, this match will go down as a learning opportunity, and the focus in training will shift forward towards the next matchup with this stubborn Midwest rival.
Several Loons had good showings this weekend, including Arvin Tabukum, Tim Dennis, and Alex Holst. Tabukum made life very difficult for the Fire midfield, creating quality chances and causing headaches often. Dennis and Holst both showed an admirable work rate, getting behind the back line consistently and threatening the hosts all game long.
U15
Chicago Fire 1 - 1 MNUFC
Chicago FC United 2 - 3 MNUFC
It was another double-match weekend for the U15s, and they came out of it unscathed. A draw against the same Chicago Fire side that beat them 3-1 last time out showed marked improvement on Saturday, while their 3-2 win over Chicago FC United tied up the trip nicely with three points.
All three teams will be back in action this weekend, as Vardar SC and SC Wave are set to make the trip to NSC on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
