Defender Francisco Calvo ended his 2018 season on a high note, earning a bench spot on the Week 35 edition of the MLS Team of the Week. This is the second time he has made the Team of the Week in 2018, last earning the honor in Week 10.
The Costa Rica international led the charge for Minnesota’s comeback in the second half against Columbus Crew SC on Sunday, October 28. The defender scored two unanswered goals inside of ten minutes to tie the game late in the second half.
His first came off a set piece, with Darwin Quintero finding him unmarked in the box. Calvo chested the ball down, turned and blasted the ball into the top of the net. Nine minutes later, Calvo pressed up into the box once again, pouncing on a loose ball after Collin Martin’s service deflected off a Crew SC defender and fell kindly for the MNUFC man. The Loons’ captain took two touches to create a shooting lane and poked the ball past U.S. national team goalkeeper Zack Steffen to get the equalizer.
