Eric Ramsay
Biography
Eric Ramsay was announced as the second head coach in the club’s Major League Soccer history on February 26, 2024. He served as a first-team coach under current English Premier League's Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.
Born in Shrewsbury, England, and growing up in Wales, Ramsay had a short stint as a player before focusing on his coaching career, playing youth soccer for both the Shrewsbury Town and The New Saints academies. Prior to heading to the university, Ramsay appeared in 14 matches for Welshpool Town in the JD Cymru Premier. Ramsay graduated with a first-class honors degree in Sports Science with Management from Loughborough University in 2013, where he also worked as an assistant coach for the university’s football team. Ramsay would join Premier League side Swansea City following graduating for three-and-a-half years as coach for the club’s U18 and U21 teams.
Ramsay returned to Shrewsbury, where he was named Interim First Team Manager of Shrewsbury Town in November 2018 and later a first-team coach from December 2018 to August 2019. He also managed his hometown's club academy in 2017. Ramsay then had experience coaching the U23 squad for Chelsea Football Club, another member of the English Premier League elite. He received his UEFA Pro License in 2019 – making him the youngest British coach ever to receive that designation.
In July 2021, Ramsay began his coaching role at Manchester United while the club was under the leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, serving as a set-piece coach with involvement in player development. As an integral member of the Manchester United staff from 2021-24, he helped lead tactical training sessions, developed young stars and worked with some of the most notable soccer players in the world including Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, and Nemanja Matić. During his two-and-a-half years with one of the top clubs in global football, Ramsay and the Red Devils won the EFL Cup and reached the FA Cup final in 2023.
Ramsay's background also includes serving as an assistant coach with the Welsh National Team in 2023.
Eric and his wife Sioned have two children, Jac and Lili. He is fluent in English, Spanish, Welsh and French and conversant in other languages.
